Jung Eui Dong's Daily Life Reveal
Our friend this time is animal replica sculptor Euidong from Heart Signal 3. Finally! A rarely seen kind of guy with analog sensibilities and warmhearted charm. One who was silently in charge of tidying up the Signal House, officially earning the title as 'joeun saram' (good person).
Q. How have you been?
"After the Heart Signal broadcast, I became a bit more known. A bit more influential than before. So I have been making dinosaur models to be displayed at natural history museums," he says.
Animal Sculptor Euidong
Euidong arrives at his work studio, which is full of dinosaur figures. After greeting co-workers, he puts on his work clothes and sits down to carefully examine a dinosaur head figure. "It's called a Tarbosaurus," he says. "It's going to be displayed at the Daegu National Science Museum." The dinosaur figure came from China. He checks on the condition to make sure it is okay, but finds a slight crack. He repairs the crack with quick-dry adhesive, sands the area smooth and sculpts to create the skin lines again. Repair work completed in a flash.
The next step is to paint the Tarbosaurus figure. Using a 3D model first created on the computer, Euidong and his co-workers discuss where to start. This way, they can easily keep checking and use it as a reference for the unclear bottom and top parts. Without hesitation, he picks out all the necessary paints and blends to create the right color. Checking the monitor, he carefully adds on the first touch of paint. Layering and layering, they work together to finish painting the figure. "So cool!" says Seunghee. And Shindong says, "It kind of gave me goosebumps."
Euidong's Special Workspace
3pm...What's next for Euidong? After entering the key code, a clean and neat space is revealed. Is it his house? But it looks like a studio...
Q. What kind of space is this?
"I give one-day classes or regular classes to teach students," he says.
Seunghee quips, "I have to go!" But the others remind her... Not allowed. Euidong's workshop is 100% reservation system. The workspace was previously used by Hankyeol who did not need it anymore, so Euidong took it over. The space is transformed and reborn as a workshop full of his unique touch and sensibilities. As Eana says, "It has completely changed."
A Fishkeeping Hobby
In the corner of the workshop, something is rustling... A bag in the fish tank? Euidong went to an aquarium shop earlier, carefully looked around, and selected 12 red bee shrimp and some more snowball shrimp. Quite knowledgeable himself when conversing with the shop owner.
Q. Do you often visit the aquarium shop?
"I don't really like being active. So I've got a lot of hobbies at home," he says. "When it comes to water life, it's been about 15 years... since middle school."
Not the type who learns hobbies on a superficial level, Euidong likes to go deep and will study a lot. And even keeps a record on a blog, continuously learning, and accumulating experience. "If I go to an aquarium shop, I won't lose [in a convo]. Like this... I also know," he says proudly.
Time to put the shrimp into the empty tank. First, he places the bag of shrimp into the tank to set the water temperature. Afterwards, he transfers the shrimp into a cup. Then back into the tank to slowly mix in the water. A slow and steady process, little by little, equalizing the water. This is the way to acclimate the shrimp from the aquarium shop water to the home tank water. The process is quite complicated. Before adding in the shrimp, the pH of the water also needs to be tested.
Careful hand movements, equalizing the water in the cup to the tank. Next, he starts to decorate the empty tank. Rolling up his sleeves, he carefully places the blocks in the tank. Once adapted, he uses a net to slowly transfer the shrimp from the cup into the new tank. Safely moved in!
Animal Figure One-Day Class
6pm. Euidong puts on an apron to signal the start of work. Shortly, the students arrive. Following the Covid-19 guidelines, he checks their temp for safety precaution.
Q. How will Euidong's class proceed?
After the students each pick an animal figure to paint today, he explains the process. First, paint a base white color so that other colors can be added later. The process is to apply several coats as thin as possible. While the students paint, he thoroughly checks and helps fix. A student asks how he can paint it so neatly, "What's the difference?" Euidong teases, "Experience."
Q. How did you start the one-day class?
"I wanted to communicate about animals through this opportunity," he says.
Heechul is surprised to learn that all the animal figures were sculpted by Euidong too. Checking in on progress, he teaches the students how to layer and blot out excess water with tissue.
Q. Isn't it tiring to manage a class?
"It's the same as the sculpting work I do now. First, I think it should be fun," he says. "It is one of the hobbies that I enjoyed... Because it is a hobby I've fallen for, I don't want them to just learn it today and be over with it. I hope it can also become their own hobby."
Sharing a hobby, not just a job. After the students finish painting their piece, he adds on the final touch by painting the eyes. A whale, a cat, and a piggy. The animal figures come to life, all done! The figures made today are packed up for the students to take home. A round of applause~ Job well done!
Heechul jokes, "The next time we see Euidong, would Seunghee be suddenly sitting there? She could be painting." Seunghee says, "I'll paint something big so it'll take longer..." Laughter~
Who Is Euidong's First Friend?
A text message alert arrives while Euidong is watching a movie on the beam projector. It is here! The "Pick a Friend" capsule toy vending machine!
Euidong says, "It feels weird. We were all busy so we couldn't see each other often... I'm looking forward to it, I'm very excited."
Q. What if a Heart Signal 2 friend appears?
He says, "I watched season 2 on TV so it'll feel a bit more like seeing a celebrity, right?"
Full of nervousness, Euidong turns the knob on the vending machine. A capsule rolls out and he opens it to check right away. The name is hidden from the viewers, but the allowance is shown... $200, the most anyone has gotten thus far! Who is Euidong's "friend-some" friend?
Back in the studio, the MCs discuss who may be a good match for him. Eana wants him to meet someone from a different season so she picks Hyunjoo or Youngjoo. The "Friend-some Day" will be revealed later in the episode... To be continued...
