Kim Ryun-gi was diagnosed with stomach cancer in November 2025. Since the tumor was very close to his esophagus, he underwent a total gastrectomy in December right after his diagnosis. And is currently still undergoing treatment, completing four of the eight rounds of adjuvant chemotherapy so far. After working at a robotics company and briefly at an auto company, he now holds a stable position working as a researcher at a defense company in Changwon. His job is mainly developing systems used in defense equipment, and he connects them all so that the equipment can operate properly. When everything he has designed fits and works, it is thrilling for him to see his ideas become reality.
Kim Jong-eun served in the Marine Corps, acquired a Level 1 emergency medical technician certification, and spent a year studying for the firefighter written exam. But while preparing to become a firefighter, he was diagnosed in July 2023 with acute myeloid leukemia (AML), a fast-growing cancer of the blood and bone marrow, and had to give up his dream. After his first round of chemotherapy, he did not go into remission at all, and then underwent a bone marrow transplant. As a result, he is now battling graft-versus-host disease, causing his lung function to decline significantly and his joints to stiffen. Post-treatment, he got a job as a safety manager, but was forced to resign after they found out about his illness. While everyone else moved ahead, he felt far behind and has been diligently working harder to study for certifications. Last year, he earned five in total, including hazardous materials, industrial safety, Level 2 fire safety management, and will keep trying until he succeeds.
Jung Ye-ji was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) in December 2018. During chemotherapy, she truly came closing to dying and for almost five days, she was in a semi-coma, but miraculously pulled through. After four to five years of treatment that followed, she has now made a full recovery. As there is little information about young people's struggles with illness, she started a blog during her treatment and is still keeping records to be of help. After she got sick, she felt that life might be shorter than she thought, and decided to do everything she wanted. To challenge herself in areas that once scared her and made her feel limited, she decided to pursue her dream of becoming an announcer. She currently delivers news as an in-house corporate announcer and also works as a traffic reporter. She really enjoys broadcasting, and her work gives her a great sense of pride.
In November 2022, Seo Ro-bin was diagnosed with a type of blood cancer called myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS), a pre-leukemic condition. She was in a high-risk group with a strong chance of developing acute leukemia. After receiving a bone marrow transplant from her older sister, she has recovered a lot, and this September marks three years. Since her illness, she has been steadily building toward her dream and is looking for a job in the food industry. After she got sick, she completely changed her diet, which got her really interested in food. As she saw how food affects people, she became interested in food marketing and is currently preparing to apply for jobs in this field.
In January 2016, at the age of 14, Kang Min-young was diagnosed with late-stage osteosarcoma in her left knee, a rare form of cancer that forms in the bones. After her second round of chemotherapy, she had surgery with a risk of amputation. A 14-cm incision was made across her knee, and an artificial bone was implanted. Treatment lasted about a year when she endured about nine rounds of chemotherapy and had surgery about three or four times on her leg. It has now been 10 years, and although she was never formally declared cured, she was told to only come back to the hospital if she wants to. She is currently running a successful online clothing store, overseeing everything from planning, design, production to sales.
In July 2023, Kim Na-young suddenly lost hearing in one ear, and after seeing an ENT specialist, a tumor was suspected. She was diagnosed with a noncancerous brain tumor on her auditory nerve called a vestibular schwannoma, also called an acoustic neuroma. Due to the potential complications of removing it surgically, which could cause paralysis or even blindness, treatment was focused only on shrinking the tumor. She was placed on steroids to try to save her hearing, but because the dose was so high, she gained over 15kg just from the swelling. To continue to pursue her dream as an actress, she had to make the unavoidable choice to stop her steroid treatment after she passed an audition, and gave up her hearing. Alongside acting, she also teaches and translates Chinese. Through acting and teaching, she loves feeling connected to others, and both jobs are meaningful to her.
