Friends: Episode 3 Lee Gi Hoon & Oh Young Joo's Friend-some Day
Our new friend Lee Gi Hoon connects with Heart Signal 2's Oh Young Joo for an exciting first meeting on Friends.

Lee Gi Hoon & Oh Young Joo's Friend-some Day
9am at Gihoon's house. He enjoys a healthy and fruitful breakfast after a quick rowing machine workout. The "Pick a Friend" capsule toy vending machine is still on the dining table. "I think we were meant to meet," he ambiguously said after the draw from the other night. Finally, "Friend-some Day" arrives! He holds up 3 fingers next to the Rabie card, and takes a photo to send out to the mystery friend. A hint about the $30 allowance for today. After breakfast, he gets changed and heads out the door...
Awkward & Exciting First Meeting
Gihoon arrives at his coffee training center, prepares coffee, and nervously waits with a trembling heart. From afar, a female in high heel boots is seen slowly walking toward the building. She opens the door and greets him "hello~" The MCs shout in excitement, it is Youngjoo! The two awkwardly greet each other with a chuckle. Gihoon prepares a glass of warm water for Youngjoo while she takes a seat and makes herself comfortable.
Youngjoo brought a tumbler along with her. Gihoon asks, "Is this coffee?" It is, as she likes to make her own coffee at home. Happy to discover a common interest, he makes direct eye contact. Seunghee giggles, "How awkward?!" While Heechul is all giddy, loving this type of awkwardness between the two. Once they sit down to chat, he asks if she remembers seeing him before. She recalls passing by his cafe in 2019 after working on a project together with Incheol, who is a common friend. They officially meet now after that chance encounter from 2 years ago.
Since this place is a coffee training center, Youngjoo brought coffee to get it appraised by the expert. Gihoon takes on the challenge and asks to taste it. "Guess what kind of beans," she says. Flustered, he jokes, "What do I get if I get it right?" Seunghee watches with excitement, "Omo!" Heechul teases by asking her to sit back, as she is about to go into the TV. Back to the test, Gihoon carefully tastes the coffee and guesses "Ethiopia." Oh, correct! Then he precisely names "Yirgacheffe" to Youngjoo's amazement. Wow, an expert indeed! He was able to identify the bean from the unique orange peel aroma. Impressive! This delicious coffee is her current obsession.
Rainbow Signal?
After happily chatting about coffee, Gihoon gives Youngjoo a quick tour of the company to show her around. Being into posters these days, she thinks the promo posters are so pretty. She then spots a rainbow on the floor finding it fascinating how it suddenly appears. A rainbow is set as her current KaTalk wallpaper. To give it meaning, like how a rainbow will appear after the rain. To save this as a memory, she takes a photo of the rainbow with their shoes. A special rainbow to celebrate "Friend-some Day." She says, "So pretty! Looks like it was purposely colored on." The MCs squeal in happiness, so heart fluttering~
A Special 1-Day Coffee Class
Youngjoo brings up her first part-time job at age 20 was at a coffee shop, and kind of remembers how to make drip coffee. Gihoon suggests teaching her again, as well as simple latte art and how to make a basic heart. "Oh, I'd like that," she says with enthusiasm. But first, he makes a cup of coffee for her to taste. Since the coffee is very hot, he sweetly tells her to drink slowly. "It's good. It's very refreshing. The initial taste is fruity but gets more savory toward the end," she says. Spot on! He is very impressed by how expressive she is with her words.
After the tasting, Gihoon's coffee class begins. He walks Youngjoo through each step of the process, from grinding the beans to inserting the filter on the espresso machine. "You've done a great job," he says. And Youngjoo smiles shyly after the praise. He wants to show her how to do latte art next. She teases him for speaking like an "AI robot" and imitates him. Then suggests adding 'ㅇ' (ieng) at the end of his sentences to sound more natural. He gives it a try and she bursts into laughter. Shindong praises how well Youngjoo leads, while Sangmin notes how considerate she is being by constantly joking around to break the awkwardness.
Youngjoo is having fun, as Gihoon is easy to tease. She tells him to raise his left hand if she is being too much and will take notice. He confirms, "Like this?" Too funny! Back to the latte art lesson. First, he demonstrates the various heart designs he will teach her. Then asks, "Shall we take a deep breath first?" She teases him again and calls out how he did not add 'ieng' at the end. He chuckles and raises his left hand. Youngjoo cracks up, "Already?!"
Fun latte art time! Youngjoo practices pouring the milk while Gihoon helps hold the mug at the right angle. Her first latte art heart is a success! Ooh~ Well done as he applauds. As a big fan of smiley faces, she wants to try to make one next. "You kind of look like it, like a smiley bear face," he says. After making a smiley face, she is satisfied with how cute it is. While he chuckles and teases that it looks a bit scary. She then laughs and jokes about how it is like one you see at the dentist, a smiley face showing teeth. Laughter~
Since Youngjoo picked a friend before, she knows an allowance is picked as well. She asks about the '3' sign from the photo he sent earlier hoping, "It's $300, right?" Gihoon chuckles and hesitantly reveals that they only have $30 for today. She tilts her head in disappointment, but he reassures that it will be fine. There is a plan...
Gihoon's Excessive Honesty
In the car, Gihoon tells Youngjoo who is holding coffee to be careful as there are many speed bumps. MCs make a fuss, squealing about the sweet comment. "I'm getting out of the car if you make me spill," she jokes. Joking aside, she asks about who he honestly wanted to pick from the friends list. He answers like a robot, "Oh Young Joo." She sighs, "I asked for nothing..." He then looks her straight in the eye to not lie and says, "Lee Ga Heun." She is taken aback by his excessive honesty this time and asks why. He likes honest and easygoing people. Since this is about meeting a new friend, Gaheun seems to be like that from what he saw on Heart Signal 3. "Will you get a chance to meet her? I met Gaheun," Youngjoo teases. "Must've been nice~" he jokingly says in return. "What is this?!" as the MCs cry out. Seunghee shouts, "Cut it out!" While Heechul says, "This kind of jealousy is unnecessary."
After the mention of Gaheun, awkwardness arises... Youngjoo chuckles and brings up how the river is frozen. As if her heart is frozen too. He notices the sudden change in atmosphere, but she feigns a smile that everything is fine right now. Gihoon is so flustered by the situation that he misses the exit on the freeway. A +20 minutes detour! She teases him, "Ottoke?!" While he tries to play it off as wanting to drive around more. Mm-hmm... chuckles...
Dinner Flex at Jayang Market
After the slight detour, the two arrive at Jayang Traditional Market. None of the $30 has been used yet so they can flex now. For dinner, the first menu of choice is tteokbokki (spicy rice cakes). Only $1 per portion! Inexpensive and delicious! Youngjoo wants to eat eomuk (fishcakes) too, but the budget is limited today so he promises to buy it for her next time. They thank the vendor and head to another stall to buy sundae (blood sausage) next. A bit pricier at $3 per portion. Gihoon politely asks, "I'd like 1 serving like 2, please!" The vendor auntie kindly adds in offal too for them upon hearing that Youngjoo likes it. They thank the lady and wish her a Happy New Year~
Did the Two Get Closer Today?
Gihoon and Youngjoo arrive at a nearby wine bar. He courteously lends a hand to help her up the slippery slope at the entrance. The surface is icy from the melted snow. This is the destination of his $30 plan. A place he has often visited before. Upon entering, she really likes the atmosphere. Outside food and alcohol can be brought in here for a table fee of $5.50/person per hour. There is an extra $0.20 fee to use plates and utensils though. To save money on that, he shyly takes out the chopsticks he brought. She chuckles, "Very nice~"
To go with the food, he also brought drinks. The first is a bottle of craft beer, and she is excited to try it. But there is more as he brought a bottle of wine too. She applauds, loving it. They start with the beer and help each other pour a glass. "It's been fun," she says. "It's not over yet. Isn't it just the beginning?" he says. They toast to Hanwoo beef for next time. Cheers! She really enjoys the beer and thinks it is like a natural wine. The aroma is there as the beer is aged in oak wine barrels he tells her. Once again, he praises her for how well she expresses the flavors.
Finally, time to eat! The two are hungry and quickly dig into the tteokbokki and sundae to go with the alcohol. Yum! Youngjoo brings up how Gihoon seems like the "FM style" type of guy. One who does not drink any alcohol. 'FM' is an acronym for 'Field Manual,' Korean slang to describe a guy who is a textbook rule follower. In fact, Gihoon does really like to drink. "A person who drinks coffee in the morning and alcohol at night" is how he introduces himself.
As the night deepens, she helps pour a glass of wine for him next. Cheers~ He suggests dropping the honorifics to speak more casually, but she tells him to go ahead while she will take it slowly. Aww... the MCs are upset! Heechul shouts, "Of course, it's because of Gaheun earlier!" Thinking they have gotten closer already, he is taken aback by her suddenly backing off from speaking casually. "I can't do it easily," she says. Anyway, bottoms up!
After dinner, they look for a place that sells hotteok (sweet pancake) for dessert. Youngjoo also likes bungeoppang (fish-shaped bread), but does not think it is sold anywhere at this hour. He shows her an app which lists the places where these street snacks are sold. Amazed, she has not seen this app before. The two connect over fish-shaped bread, as they both like to eat the head first to save the delicious and crunchy tail for last.
The conversation carries on while they enjoy the rest of the wine. Youngjoo compliments him for being a very good listener. Shindong notices how Gihoon is really good at giving eye contact. As they continue to chat, he asks again if it is okay to drop the honorifics. This time, she finally agrees, "Okay, okay!" *jjan* Cheers~
Back to the studio...Sangmin wraps up, "The atmosphere between the two was like Heart Signal." Heechul agrees with how lovely the mood was in the beginning when they were making coffee. Like a sweet drama. They point out Gihoon's mistake in the car though when he was asked who he wanted to pick. The answer should have been "Oh Young Joo" until the very end. Seunghee jokes, "She'd be clapping with her feet~" if so. The MCs crack up!
