Oh Young Joo "Friend-some Day" with Lee Ga Heun
After unboxing the "Pick a Friend" capsule toy vending machine, Youngjoo carefully reads the instructions:
- If you turn the knob, today's friend will be delivered.
- Meet with the friend that is picked at random.
- You can only use the given allowance (10,000 won - 1,000,000 won).
The MCs watch on with excitement as Youngjoo turns the knob... Sangmin says, "If you are a true fan of the Heart Signal series, this must be driving you crazy!" Youngjoo nervously opens the capsule to take a peek... After seeing the name, she calls up Jaeho (the hack-inssa who knows everyone) for help in getting the person's contact info.
The "Friend-some Day" arrives! Youngjoo tidies up the house and carefully chooses an outfit before heading out to meet the new friend. While waiting outside of the restaurant, a familiar face shows up to greet her. It is Gaheun!
"I was really nervous. My hands were shaking. She is one of the people I have been the most curious about," says Gaheun after receiving a call from Youngjoo for the meet up.
The girls find something in common right away. Youngjoo has the same coat that Gaheun is wearing and jokes, "It would have been funny if I wore it too!" The two girls happily shake hands, "Nice to meet you!"
Dinner at Restaurant Guseogjib
Youngjoo and Gaheun enter the restaurant and joke about how they are meeting out of nowhere. To help ease the initial awkwardness, they decide to order food first. Youngjoo mentions eating at this restaurant once before, and it was really good. She asks if it is okay to just order a half portion of the gochu twigim (fried stuffed peppers) to save money. The "Friend-some Day" allowance on the Rabie Card is a bit tight at only $50.
Then Youngjoo hands a gift to Gaheun. The Heart Signal cheat key, a hot pack! Youngjoo warmed it up in advance for Gaheun who teases, "Shouldn't you do it like Kangyeol oppa?" The two giggle thinking about the legendary hot pack handholding scene between Kangyeol and Jihyun from season 3.
The girls decide to have a drink together and order a bottle of makgeolli to share. For the food, gochu twigim (fried stuffed peppers) and kkobi which is short for kkomak-muchim (seasoned cockles) bibimbap. On the house, sogogi miyeok-guk (beef seaweed soup) is also served. Youngjoo cracks up watching Gaheun twirl the bottle of makgeolli like a pro to mix it up. She jokes, "It's not your first time huh?" Gaheun responds, "Of course not!"
After a few sips of alcohol, they soon agree on dropping the honorifics to start speaking more comfortably. Gaheun shares that finding good restaurants is her hobby. It is the same for Youngjoo as she shares her list of places. Both of them organize and save their favorite places on the map with hearts.
The topic soon turns to guys when Youngjoo brings up Gaheun's "I'm cheerful (bright)!" scene with Inwoo, saying it left an impression and how lovely she was in that moment. Gaheun simply said "I'm cheerful!" because she is, and really did not know if it could have been heart fluttering to someone.
Cheers~ The honest talk continues as they pour drinks for each other. Youngjoo believes in this superstition where you cannot get married if you pour your own drink. "You don't have to get married," teases Gaheun. "I have to. You only live once," says Youngjoo. Then asks, "Are you not going to?" Gaheun responds, "It'd be nice if I do."
Gaheun reveals that she has a thing for guys who wears glasses. The nerdy, engineering type. From the guys who were in Heart Signal 2, Youngjoo thinks Dokyun and Gyubin are both kind of that style. Without hesitation, Gaheun picks Dokyun as her type! Sangmin teases about a possible introduction between the two...
The bottle of makgeolli is quickly emptied as the girls drink up and chat away. "There is nothing like alcohol to help get acquainted as long as you drink with manners," says Heechul. Shindong agrees.
Youngjoo then shares how to make the "WOW" face, which is something she recently learned. It is a popular trend among young people when doing something cool together. The girls crack up after practicing, thinking they look so silly. The enjoyable dinner ends, and it is time to pay the bill. Remaining balance on the card is $12.50.
While walking down the street, they spot a vendor selling freshly made ingeo-ppang (fish-shaped bun). For just $1, they order one with red bean paste filling and one with choux cream to share. The owner even gives them an extra one for free since it is missing the tail. The two head over to Youngjoo's house next, which is close by.
Welcome to Youngjoo's House
The girls arrive at Youngjoo's house, and Gaheun is feeling excited. Upon entering, she compliments how nice the scent is in the house. After a quick tour of the house, Youngjoo prepares an activity for them. "What is it? Making a bracelet?" asks Gaheun. Ta-da, nail art kit for a self gel pedicure!
This is Gaheun's first time doing a self gel pedicure so Youngjoo helps walk her through the process. Step 1: apply the nail primer to clean and remove oil. Step 2: apply a thin coat of nail bonder and cure under the LED lamp. Step 3: choose a gel polish color to apply. Gaheun picks the apricot color (salgusaek). Youngjoo jokes, "Apricot (salgu)? Do you want to live with me (narang salgu sibo)?" The MCs burst into laughter about the silly pun. Heechul teases, "She's drunk!" Gaheun cracks up without responding. Youngjoo teases, "You won't accept me like this?"
Gaheun takes out a Polaroid camera she brought to take pictures together with. Youngjoo teases, "Does it remind you of him (Inwoo)?" Suddenly feeling thirsty, Gaheun cheers with the water glass. Laughter~ Youngjoo asks, "Do you need alcohol? Should we go round 2?" Youngjoo Bar...
Time for some girl talk again while working on the pedicures. Youngjoo asks Gaheun who she would have picked if she was on Heart Signal 2. Without hesitation, "Dokyun!" The popping Korean medicine doctor does have a hint of humor to him. The convo then leads to how they would express feelings toward a guy of interest. Gaheun honestly says, "When I like someone, he'd know!" Youngjoo agrees, "Me too!" And shares how she would become boring in front of the guy, due to feeling nervous and wanting to look pretty. The girls agree on how it is best to be natural.
Youngjoo gets this question a lot about the show, "Is it scripted?" If it was, her acting is amazing and she would not have cried. Gaheun teases and playfully imitates the tissue crying scene. The MCs all burst into laughter! "They've become real friends," says Seunghee. The two are getting along, laughing, and having fun.
The convo turns serious as they reminisce about the times at the Signal House. Youngjoo brings up how watching on broadcast is completely different than when filming. There were many things she was unaware of. For instance, when Hyunwoo went to look for her after a misunderstanding. It was a shock as she really did not know at the time and thought, "How many moments were misunderstood without us knowing in life?" She realized "that oppa" is the type who does not talk much. Sangmin gets slightly emotional watching. Mentioning the past, "That oppa..."
Youngjoo asks Gaheun if it would be uncomfortable to meet Inwoo oppa through this show. "It'll be uncomfortable," says Gaheun. But she is willing to go meet him if picked, "I'll ask him how he's been and talk." Youngjoo asks, "As if nothing happened?" That is impossible to do since she is often asked about what happened with him. The public knows about the "some" from the show. The girls both prefer to meet a guy who has not watched Heart Signal.
Sangmin comments on how it is possible for them to have such a open and candid conversation because they are from different seasons. Seunghee adds that it feels like the two have already gotten pretty close.
The girls wrap up the pedicures with some nail art. Gaheun finds a cute cat sticker and teases again, "Come to me (naegewa), cat!" A copy of Gyubin's famous "Come to me, Youngjoo!" line. Laughter erupts! Youngjoo says, "Wow! I can't believe how mischievous you are!" Gaheun feels proud and thanks her for noticing.
To save the memory, Gaheun takes a Polaroid of their finished pedicures. A black and white photo! Shindong likes this kind of "gamsung" (vibe).
At 9pm, the two put on matching coats and head out to the nearby convenience store together. They pick up a bag of udon, pancake mix, snacks, and jelly candy with the remaining allowance money.
Back at the house, the girls cook up some late-night snacks together. A natto kimchi jeon and yaki udon, delicious! The girls cheers with glasses of sangria to wrap up the fun "Friend-some Day"~
As Shindong says, it was fun to watch Youngjoo and Gaheun. Their original personalities just match well with each other and they were able to get along without much effort. Hope to see more of this developing friendship! 💛
