Kim Do Kyun meets new friend Lee Gi Hoon for an awkward at-home "Friend-some Day" on Friends Episode 3.

On a Saturday, Director Dokyun is busy at work. Previously, he picked a "new friend" from the capsule toy vending machine (shown on Episode 2). The "new friend" is not from the Heart Signal seasons so the identity of the person is still unknown. Finally, today is the day to go meet this mysterious "new friend!"
Prior to the meet-up. "I pulled it out, and it said 'new friend'... the last one with a question mark. I'm worried. I'm not a very good talker," says Dokyun who anxiously scratches his head.
Looking For the "New Friend"
Dokyun gets off work at 2pm and heads out to find the new friend with a map in hand. Passing by the checkpoints, he gets closer and closer to the destination. Almost there! There are 3 shops side by side at the end of the alley. It is the correct place so he opens the door to the cafe. A guy greets him but says they closed early today. Dokyun is taken aback, since he followed the map here to find the new friend. Then asks, "Have you seen anyone?" The guy laughs and finally says, "Nice to meet you!" Turns out this person is the new friend! Already joking around trying to mess with Dokyun upon meeting.
Since handshakes are avoided these days, the two politely greet each other with a fist bump instead. After Dokyun takes a seat, the guy introduces himself as Lee Gi Hoon. Shindong thinks Gihoon is handsome. Even kind of looks like Lee Seung Gi from a distance. "Oh!" as Seunghee nods in agreement.
Coffee Business CEO Lee Gi Hoon
This is the first time Dokyun has ever been in the Dangin-dong neighborhood. Gihoon chose this location because he liked how cute the 3 shops looked side by side. Is he the owner of this cafe? This is where he first started about 5 years ago. Not only a cafe owner. Gihoon has a separate company that imports coffee beans from Australia, and is the official distributor in Korea. Plus a coffee training center too.
To introduce Gihoon, Dukes Coffee Training Center is revealed. The place where Australian specialty coffee beans begin to be distributed in Korea. Dokyun & Gihoon's Awkward First Meeting
The two guys try to brush off the initial awkwardness, and begin chatting to get to know one another. People would often come to the cafe alone, so Gihoon would sit down to talk with them. Just like right now. "Like Midnight Diner," jokes Dokyun. Exactly, to serve coffee and have a conversation. Often even giving out one more cup.
Dokyun says, "Looking at his eyes, I can feel the coldness. But there's also warmth inside. A mysterious feeling."
As revealed on his daily life segment last episode, Dokyun does not drink coffee while on the job. Today's timing is just right, since he is off work to start the weekend. Gihoon prepares a special cup of coffee for Dokyun, who really likes to drink it. "Thank you!" as Dokyun excitedly takes a sip. The coffee suits his tastes, "It's delicious."
After enjoying the coffee, Dokyun carefully reveals the "Friend-some Day" allowance money. Only $50. What to do on such a cold day with only $50? Gihoon chuckles. In case there was nowhere else to go, and have to go back to his house... he already cleaned up in advance. Dokyun jokes, "I wonder if my house is clean...?"
Time for dinner. In the car, Gihoon mentions how it might be hard to suddenly go to a restaurant due to the current Covid-19 situation. He says, "Let's not eat out. Let's go to my house. Since Dokyun didn't plan anything [chuckles], let me try cooking." A sudden invitation to Gihoon's house! The plan is to cook dinner at home. First, they will need to make a stop for groceries on the way. Dokyun offers to pay for it so Gihoon thanks him with a smile.
Dokyun reveals, "1-on-1 and with a guy... What should I do? What should we talk about?" Full of worries...
Welcome to Gihoon's House
Dokyun enters the house while creating his own BGM "dada dada da~" and sends a compliment. "Wow, the house is so nice!" The interior is stylish and luxurious. And the view of Namsan Tower from the house is amazing! Gihoon gives Dokyun a quick tour of the house. He is intrigued by how pretty everything looks. From the mobile to the light stands and the artwork. The house is so beautifully decorated! Dokyun says, "The passion for his own preferences and for the things he enjoys, it was kind of cool." Even Shindong wants to visit the house.
Looking here and there, Dokyun admires the house for a while. The space is lovely to him. Gihoon moved into this house because of the kitchen. More than the view, he loved the kitchen and can see himself inviting friends over to cook delicious food for them. Gihoon reveals how his thoughts about home changed since the pandemic. He says, "It used to be 'a house for me.' But now... If I decorate the house, the people around me can make good memories here together. Sangmin says, "He's a good guy, very kind." And Heechul says, "He's cool."
Gihoon's Impressive Cooking Time
The guys are feeling hungry. Time to start cooking. But first a drink! Gihoon asks Dokyun what alcohol he wants to drink. He replies, "I like beer or wine is nice too!" Gihoon tells him to open the fridge to choose. The fridge is neatly filled with different types of craft beer. Wow! Dokyun is intrigued by the can with a raspberry pie label and asks, "Is this beer too?" A type of beer he has never seen before and thinks is so unique. Gihoon says, "It kind of tastes like fruit juice." (Note: the beer is Brewski Raspberry Pie, a Sour - Fruited Berliner Weisse)
Gihoon pours out the Raspberry Pie into beer glasses to share while Dokyun is curiously looking around. He asks, "Is this a fruit knife?" Gihoon chuckles, "It's a knife for shucking oysters." Dokyun feels embarrassed. The two guys have a good laugh. Anyway, time to drink! "Cheers~ Nice to meet you!" Dokyun finally tries the beer and thinks it is good, perfect for female guests. Right, Gihoon agrees how it is a beer that women would like. Dokyun jokes during the interview, "I was worked on. As soon as I drank [the beer], I got more relaxed."
Gihoon prepares to cook and starts chopping up the fennel. Dokyun who is watching from the sidelines is intrigued by the new ingredient, and tries a piece. Mmm~ quite fragrant. Since it is good, he picks up another piece. Dokyun takes a look at the various spices to check for ones he cannot eat, "Star anise... What's this?" It is called palgak as Gihoon explains, a spice commonly used in Chinese cuisine. Dokyun knows it is a kind of herbal medicine too and racks his brain trying to think of the name, "Ah...It hurts my pride." And fennel might be one too...
The fennel and star anise goes into the pan to stir-fry. Dokyun leans in closer for a smell. Can't take it anymore, he finally grabs his phone to look up star anise. "Wow~ His passion," says Seunghee regarding his serious face. After searching, he finally got the answers. Both are indeed used in herbal medicines. Star anise is "daehwehyang" and fennel is "sohwehyang" as he excitedly explains. Both help aid in digestion. Dokyun looks quite proud, and reveals how he does have a strong competitive side to him. When that side comes out, he jokes how he is more of a loser instead of looking cool. So he has been trying hard to get rid of his competitiveness. The MCs crack up!
Can the Two Become Friends?
Gihoon shows off his impressive cooking skills while Dokyun watches intently. So cool! The meat is seasoned, and then seared nicely in the pan with the fennel. Lastly, white wine is added to help remove any unpleasant meat odor and the perfect dish is complete. Dokyun who has a strong desire to win looks on with envy. A complete K.O! Even the MCs exclaim in amazement, it looks so delicious!
The guys finally sit down for dinner, and have a glass of wine to celebrate their first meeting. Dokyun urges Gihoon to drop the honorifics with him to speak more comfortably. But Gihoon will only do it if they both drop the honorifics together. Dokyun chuckles and teases, "It takes time for me." Gihoon usually needs time as well, but since this is a sudden meeting brought together by a capsule toy vending machine..."Let's drop the honorifics, yeah?" And so the two go back and forth trying to speak casually, sounding like robots. Too funny! Time to just drink. Cheers~
The slightly awkward "Friend-some Day" wraps up. Dokyun agrees to call Gihoon, hyung (older brother). Perhaps, the two can gradually become closer over time. One small step at a time. Catch more of this developing friendship between Dokyun and Gihoon next time on Friends...
